How Steam Generation Works
Firetube and watertube boilers heat water to produce steam. Steam is commonly used for humidification, sterilization, and for space heating for commercial and institutional applications. In industry, steam is commonly used for power generation, to drive turbines, and to heat and cool processes.
Steam generation turns pretreated water and condensed steam (condensate) into usable steam within a pressure vessel:
Feedwater Preparation: Pretreated water (via ion exchange or reverse osmosis) combines with returned condensate to form boiler feedwater.
Deaeration: The feedwater is heated just above boiling (212°F) and injected with steam to mechanically remove dissolved oxygen and non-condensable gases. Any remaining oxygen is scavenged using chemical treatment.
Pressurization & Scale Control: The deaerated feedwater is pressurized above operating pressure to replace water lost to steam or blowdown. Sludge-conditioning chemicals are added to prevent scale deposits, such as calcium carbonate and iron oxide, on heat-transfer surfaces.
Condensate Protection: As steam exits the boiler into the header, return-line treatment neutralizes carbonic acid formed by ionizing carbon dioxide.
